Adjusting the braking system
Safety
WARNING!
Danger due to incorrectly performed work.
This can result in serious injury and damage to property.
► When adjusting the machine, follow the “Safety rules”.
In particular, the following sub-sections of the “Safety rules” must be strictly observed:
-
Spares / wearing parts and accessories
-
Safety measures for maintenance, inspection and troubleshooting
-
Particular danger spots
The VR 4040 unreeling device comes with default settings that are ideal for a very wide
range of wire spools and welding wires.
Only attempt to change any settings if this is really necessary and you have thoroughly un
-
derstood the contents of the sections headed “Functional principle” and “Adjusting the
braking system”.
Adjusting the
braking force
The factory-set braking force makes it possible for a 40 kg spool to be braked down to zero
without difficulty, even at a wirefeed speed of 22 m/min.
When heavy wire spools are being used and a higher braking force has been set, the “lever
+ drawback pulley” unit assumes a slightly higher working position.
This allows for the longer deceleration time that is needed for heavy wire spools. In such
a case, then, do not attempt to correct the working position.
At the end of deceleration, the “lever + drawback pulley” unit must stay a certain distance
away from the bottom mechanical limit-stop. This ensures that there is sufficient tensile
load on the wire after any break in welding.
Higher braking force
If higher braking force is needed, particularly when very heavy wire spools (> 40 kg) and/
or very high wirespeeds (> 22 m/min) are being used, the action of the spring can be in
-
creased as follows:
-
Take off the side guard panel (see: “Start-up”)
-
Suspend the spring (6) from one of the outermost notches on the braking lever (3)
Note! Setting an excessively high braking force may necessitate shorter maintenance in
-
tervals. It also slightly increases the tensile load on the wire when the unreeling device is
in equilibrium (constant wirefeed rate).
-
Function test (see: “Care, maintenance and inspection”)
-
Mount the side guard panel
Lower braking force
Note! If too low a braking force is set , this may lead to the welding wire not being sufficient
-
ly tensioned.
