Changing to dual-core processors

Note for engineers:
An ISO image is available via the mailbox.
Operating system
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (SP1) and some Linux
operating system versions already support the 64-bit Intel Xeon 7000 Sequence
processors (dual-core processors).

Important!
As with all hardware installation procedures, make sure the system has
been shut down and completely disconnected from the mains.
PRIMERGY RX600 S2 systems support between one and four processors with
the following restrictions:
●
The clock frequency of the front side bus (FSB) is 667 MHz.
●
The processors must belong to the same processor family.
●
All processors of the system must have the same cache size.

If there are errors in the processor configuration, the system will not boot
completely. In this case, no POST error information is displayed on the
screen.

Tasks to be performed
To convert the system to dual-core processors, perform the following steps:
1. Check that the system board hardware supports these processors (see
section “Hardware requirements” on page 42
).
2. If required, upgrade to the new VRM modules (no. C47406-001).
3. Update the BMC firmware, the system BIOS and the FRU/SDR to the latest
version (see
V
IMPORTANT!
These steps must be performed before replacing the processors.
