SuperPro Series Installation Manual
CEBus
Consumer Electronics Bus Protocol for control and communication with all devices
within homes.
CEDIA
Custom Electronic Design Installers Association.
Central Office
(CO)
The place where communication common carriers terminate customer lines and locate
switching equipment that interconnects those lines.
CIC
CEBus Industry Council.
Cladding
The glass material surrounding the core of an optical waveguide. The cladding must
have a lower index of refraction in order to steer the light in the core.
Cleaver
Tool used to cut optical fiber at a 90
°
angle to prepare for splicing or connecting.
Coating
A material put on a fiber during the drawing process to protect it from the environment.
Coax Cable
Prep Tool
Tool used to evenly strip RG6 Cable for easy connections.
Coax
Compression
Crimp Tool
Tool used to compress RG6 “F” fitting onto cable. Gives a solid fit and connection to
inhibit ghosting and reduce signal attenuation.
Coaxial Cable
An outer conductor concentric to an inner conductor, separated from each other by a
dielectric material.
Conductor
A medium that allows a significant level of electron flow. Twisted Pair and Coax are
conductors.
Core
The central glass region of an optical fiber through which light is transmitted.
Crosstalk
When an undesired signal interferes with the desired signal.
CXBus
CEBus acronym for RG6 Quad Shielded Coax Cable.
Daisy Chaining The connection of multiple devices in a serial fashion. An advantage of daisy chaining
is a savings in transmission facilities. A disadvantage is that if a device malfunctions, all
of the devices chained behind it are disabled.
Dark Fiber
Fiber that has been installed, but has no light traveling through it.
Data Rate
The maximum number of bits of information that can be transmitted per second, as in a
data transmission link. Typically expressed as megabits per second (Mbps).
dB
The decibel is a unit for expressing relative differences in signal strength.
dBmv
Signal strength relative to one-thousandth of a volt.
dBmw
Signal strength relative to one-thousandth of a watt.
DBS
Direct Broadcast Satellite.
DDS
Direct Digital Satellite.
Decibel
(dB) Unit for specifying the relative strength of a signal.
Desktop Video
Conferencing
Video Conferencing from a PC desktop. Video and voice over the LAN, over an ISDN
telephone line, or over fiber.
Dielectric
Non-Metallic material and, therefore, non-conductive electrically. Glass fibers are
considered dielectric.
Digital
A data format that uses two physical levels to transmit information. A discrete or
