Chapter 2: Hardware Installation
General Installation Procedure
2-5
2.3.3 Preparation
Make sure you are aware of the related positions of each plug-in
module and interface connector.
Default configurations: The R (redundant controller) model provides
a total of eight (8) 4Gb/s Fibre Channel host ports and a 4x (4-PHY),
wide-link, SAS port. They are marked as “
CH0
” or “
CH1
” and “
SAS
Exp
.” Use these ports to connect application servers and expansion
JBOD(s).
Rorke’s JBODs come with external SAS cables for making the inter-
enclosure connections.
Cables for connecting Fibre and SAS devices must be handled with
care and must not be bent. To prevent emission interference within a
rack system and accidental cable disconnection, the routing path must
be carefully planned.
2.4 General Installation Procedure
Following all the instructions provided below can minimize subsystem
installation time. Detailed, illustrated instructions for each component are
given in the following sections.
CAUTION!
To ensure that your system is correctly installed, please follow the steps
outlined below. If you follow these steps, installation will be fast and
efficient. If you do not follow these steps, you may accidentally install the
hardware incorrectly.
1.
Unpack:
Unpack the subsystem and confirm that all components on the
list were included. (See
Section 2.5
)
2.
Rack/Cabinet installation:
If the subsystem is going to be installed in
a rack or cabinet, it should be installed prior to installing the hard
drives. Installing the subsystem into a rack or cabinet requires at least
two (2) people. (See
Section 2.9
)
3.
Install hard drives:
Separately purchased SAS or SATA hard drives
must be individually attached to the drive trays. (See
Section 2.6
)
4.
Install hard drives:
Although hard drives have been pre-
installed into trays, a drive may need to be replaced. Follow the
installation procedures to install a drive in a drive tray. (See
Section
