1. Product description
The Gardigo Bat House is a natural bats retreat. Bats like to nest in barns or in attics.
The improved insulation of houses and roofs makes it increasingly difficult for bats to
find a suitable place for nesting. Gardigo‘s Bat House is very suited to the needs of bats.
Many of the domestic bat species are endangered in their stock. If a Bat House is hung
in the right place, you help the bats find a safe home to stay and bring up their young.
Bats are very useful animals as they feed on a variety of insects in large quantities,
including mosquitoes and flies.
2. Operation
It takes a bit of patience before bats find shelter and settle. Even if you do everything
right, it may take a year or two for the bats to settle permanently. This depends on the
food supply in the area as well as on the positioning of the bat boxes. It is therefore
important to follow some points when hanging the boxes:
• Bats often change their location. Boxes should therefore be hung in groups, 4 - 5
pieces, at a distance of about 5 m from each other.
• If you hang the boxes in the garden or on a house wall, mainly domestic bats (such as
mouse ear, pygmy bat) will be your guests.
• If you prefer hanging the Bat Houses near a forest, you will have more forest bats as
guests. Make sure you choose an area where there are sufficient insect as food sup-
ply. Ideal are forest and roadsides, glades locations near wetlands and a waterfront.
• Hang the boxes at a height of 3 - 6 m. Make sure that cats cannot reach the boxes.
• Bats are very heat loving animals. Therefore, the boxes should be attached facing
south, south-west or south-east. If you install more than one box, you should vary
the orientation. Make sure that the boxes do not hang in a strong wind draught.
• Bats need an open approach to the box. In front of the entrance hole there should
be about 1 m of free space in front of and about 2 m below the house. If necessary,
remove branches and scrub.
