INPUT SHAFT SEAL ASSEMBLY
Input Shaft Seal Maintenance –
Normal wear and tear of the shaft seal may result in a small lubricating oil from
the input shaft area. The shaft seal assembly is replaceable and part numbers (for direct drive and geared
compressor variants) are provided in Parts List Manual listed on Page 5. Be aware that replacement of the shaft
seal assembly involves removing the compressor from the package, an operation that may be best handled by
an experienced Gardner Denver technician.
Shaft Seal Replacement (applies to both direct drive and geared drive compressors):
1.
Have the proper shaft seal replacement kit available.
2.
Be sure the unit is completely off and that no air pressure is in the oil reservoir and in the air cooled after
cooler. Close the service valve.
3.
Disconnect lockout and tagout the power supply to the starter.
4.
Remove the compressor from the package and remove its coupling hub
– refer to “Coupling Hub Removal”
in Section 8, page 67, for instructions.
5.
Remove four (4) bolts securing the seal cover to the compressor cylinder and pull away from the input shaft
to dismount. Remove the snap ring securing the shaft seal assembly to the seal cover and remove the
latter. Replace the shaft seal assembly and secure in place with the snap ring.
6.
Remove the shaft key. Pull away the internal wear ring from the shaft to dismount. Replace the internal
wear sleeve with a new one
– make sure to smear compressor oil unto the new o-ring seal to ease its
installation unto the shaft.
7.
Carefully slide back shaft assembly and the seal cover unto the shaft and secure the latter with the provided
four (4) bolts.
8.
Re-install the compressor shaft key, coupling hub and compressor assembly in the reverse order.
9.
Operate the compressor for a short time and make sure that the shaft seal is not leaking.
