3.6.5 CLEANING BATTERIES
• Clean the top of the battery, the terminals, and all connections with a cloth or
brush with a solution of baking soda and water (ensure that none of the baking
soda solution gets inside of the battery). Use 1lb of baking soda for 1 gallon of
water (120g for 1 liter of water).
• Rinse with plain water and dry the battery
• If possible, add a thin layer of terminal protector (Available at most battery deal-
ers or auto parts stores).
• Always keep batteries dry and clean.
3.6.6 Removing corrosion from battery poles
Make sure that the poles and the surface of batteries are clean at all times. To re-
move corrosion, add a solution of water and baking soda. Use 1lb of baking soda for 1
gallon of water (120g for 1 liter of water). Do not allow any cleaning solution to enter
the battery cells. If baking soda is not available, a terminal brush can be used to clean
the battery poles. Terminal brushes are available at most local hardware supplies.
