Control system components
Introduction
This section describes the components that allow automation of ÄKTA ready XL by
the control system.
Control system
ÄKTA ready XL is fully automated by means of a control software. Examples of con-
trol software include:

UNICORN
Control software developed by GE Healthcare and owned by GE.
The control software is part of the configuration.
DeltaV
Control software developed and owned by Emerson Process
Management group of companies. The control software can be
part of the configuration and configured by GE Healthcare. The
control software can be the responsibility of the customer and
not part of the configuration.

Control unit
A control unit is the controlling interface between the control software and the com-
ponents of ÄKTA ready XL.
For system with UNICORN control software, the control unit CU-960 is located inside
the electrical cabinet and has capabilities to store real time data during short discon-
nection from the computer. Data stored on CU-960 can be uploaded to the computer
once communication to the computer is re-established. Upload of data from CU-960
to the computer will be indicated on the touchscreen monitor. The system can be
controlled again once the upload of data from CU-960 is completed. Data upload can
take several minutes to complete.

ing data from CU-960.
For systems with DeltaV control software, the systems can be connected to the
DeltaV controller via a PI-960 control unit or PROFIBUS connection.
