6.6
Volume Controlled Ventilation (VCV)
Volume controlled ventilation is a mode of ventilation in which the Tidal Volume is the set point. Tidal Volume is achieved during
the inspiration phase in a time determined by the Flow Rate control (slope control). The Tidal Volume is delivered within the
inspiration time depending on the slope setting. The slope dictates the amount of inspiration time required to deliver the volume
required by the setpoint. Once the volume is delivered the pressure is held until the inspiration timer times out and the pressure
is released against the PEEP valve for the expiration cycle. Setting high slope angles will deliver the volume rapidly but will cause
higher peak pressures to be achieved. Lower slope settings will achieve a lower peak pressure but may not allow the system to
achieve the set volume in the RR regime. If the Vti is not reached in the inspiration time set and alarm will come up to ask for a
greater flow rate or increased inspiration time. Either will achieve a greater Vti.
