Installation & Operation Manual
Management Connection Procedure
The following procedure makes a management link between two SC2000 shelves using GDC cable
P/N 024H218-001 at the two sets of Berg pins on each shelf. Proper placement and orientation of
each cable connector is required in order for the SCM to manage the devices in both shelves.
1. At both SC2000 shelves, remove the jumpers from the upper and lower Berg pins.
2. At Shelf #1, connect the P1 connector (red wire) to the upper Berg pins (SCM 1).
Ensure that the white dot on the P1 connector is at Pin 1.
3. At Shelf #1, connect the P3 connector (black wire) to the lower Berg pins (SCM 2).
Ensure that the white dot on the P3 connector is at Pin 1.
4. At Shelf #2, connect the P2 connector (red wire) to the upper berg pins (SCM 1).
Ensure that the white dot on the P2 connector is at Pin 1.
5. At Shelf #2, connect the P4 connector (black wire) to the lower berg pins (SCM 2).
Ensure that the white dot on the P4 connector is at Pin 1.
Addressing
The network management system employs a slot-line-drop method of addressing network elements:
•
Slot address is the number of the slot it occupies in the SpectraComm Shelf.
•
Line address is always 1, and the network element is drop 0.
In a point-to-point circuit the single remote unit is drop 1.
In a multi-point circuit the drop numbers of the remote units are selectable.
If the firmware is ever changed on the SRM-6, the nonvolatile memory retains the user-defined
configuration.
Timing
In point-to-point TDM operation, Internal or External timing is provided by the co-located modem
or DTE on one of the two sides. The other modem must be configured for Receive timing.
Note
For more information on the setting the timing source at the modem or DSU, refer to the latest issue of the
corresponding manual.
Power On Self Test (POST)
This test checks operation of the LEDs and the microprocessor. In the POST sequence provided
below, the SRM-6 is set to the default configuration.
1. Install the SRM-6 in the shelf. When the shelf is powered on, power is available to the SRM-6
and the ON LED turns green.
2. Then the ON/AM LED and the INS/TM LED turn red for approximately eight seconds.
3. With a successful power up, the RD, ON/AM, and INS/TM LEDs will turn green for one
second. Then, the RD LEDs will go off.
•
ON/AM led will remain green since, in the default state, all alarms are masked.
•
INS/TM led will remain green since the SRM-6 card is in service and not undergoing any
diagnostics immediately after power up.
