Do not allow the wiper blades to drag on a dry windshield. Doing so will
shorten blade life and place excessive loads on the wiper mechanism, as
well as leaving scratches on the windshield surface. When operating the
windshield wiper motor to test, spray water on the windshield.
Sweep Adjustment
With the motor in full park position, move the wiper arm until it is perpendicular with the glass (mid-
center position). Place the wiper blade in a vertical position, parallel with the main arm. Adjust the fol-
lower arm (lengthen or shorten) to slip over the panto post without disturbing the upper arm and blade
position on the glass. Blades which are off center, (turned left or right) due to wear should be recentered.
Worn blades should be replaced if, once recentered, do not remain in the proper position.
Water should be sprayed on the windshield during wiper service to
aid in wiper sweep adjustment. Do not allow blades to drag on dry
windshields.
Once the wiper arm and blade are positioned, turn the motor to the full ON position. Observe wiper
sweep pattern. Blades should not touch rubber moldings. If sweep is off-center, move the main arm
clockwise or counterclockwise on the drum segment to change the wiper sweep. After each change,
recenter the blade to the mid-center position.
Windshield Wiper Inspection
Wipers should be inspected and observed for the following defects and corrections made before the
vehicle is released for service:
• Deterioration of the rubber blade
• Full sweep of the arms
• Spray pattern of the washer nozzles
Replacing Windshield Wipers
To replace the wiper blades it is necessary to replace the entire wiper blade assembly. Replacement
windshield wipers are available through your Gillig Parts representative.
