Muffler Removal
The muffler is vertically mounted in the upper
left hand compartment above the engine. The
tail pipe exhausts the gases from the upper left
rear corner of the bus. Remove the muffler as
follows.
1. Open the muffler access door on the rear
street side of the coach.
2. Remove the band clamps that attach the
tail pipe to the top outlet and the exhaust
pipe to the bottom outlet of the muffler.
Each band clamp is secured by two cap
-
screws.
3. Disconnect the tail pipe and the exhaust
pipe from the muffler. Remove the tail
pipe.
4. Remove the bolts, nuts, and washers
that attach the base of the muffler to the
engine compartment frame.
5. Remove U-bolt at the top of the muffler,
which clamps the muffler’s outlet tube.
6. The muffler is heavy. Carefully remove
the muffler from the coach through the
muffler access door opening.
Muffler Installation
1. Position the muffler inside the rear
cap with the lower mounting brackets
aligned with the mounting bolt holes.
Install the lower mounting bolts, nuts,
and washers. Tighten the bolts to 27–33
ft-lb (35–45 N-m) torque.
2. Install the nuts on the mounting clamp U-bolt and tighten them to 27–33 ft-lb
(35–45 N-m) torque.
3. Connect the exhaust pipe to the lower muffler inlet and loosely install the band clamp.
Do not
reuse aluminized steel band clamps. See important Notices and instructions in “Exhaust
Clamp Installation” above.
4. Install the tail pipe on the upper outlet of the muffler and install the band clamp. Tighten both the
exhaust pipe and tail pipe band clamps following the steps given in “Exhaust Clamp Installation”
above. Ensure that both pipes are completely sealed by the clamps.
