• All compression rings are marked on the upper
, side of the ring. When installing the compression
rings, make sure the MARKED SIDE IS TOWARD
THE TOP OF THE PISTON. :
• Some oil control rings are three piece types, con
sisting of two rails and an expander. Others are
two piece types, consisting of a ring and an expan
der.
1. Expander.
2. Oil control ring or lower rail.
3. Upper rail (if used).
4. Third compression ring. ^
5. Second compression ring.
6. Top compression ring.
Inspect
Ring fit. Flex all rings to make sure they are free. If
binding occurs at any point, the cause should be
determined. If binding is caused by the ring groove,
correct by dressing the groove with a fine cut file. If
binding is caused by a distorted ring, try a new
ring:

Measure (Figure 34)
Ring clearance. Use a feeler gage as shown in
figure 34. Compare with “Specifications.”

INTAKE AND EXHAUST
MANIFOLDS
] Clean
■
Old pieces of gasket from the gasket surfaces.
Excessive carbon build-up in the exhaust passages
of the intake manifold.
Scale and deposits from the coolant passages of
the intake manifold.
EGR passage of excessive carbon deposits.

Flanges
Inspect (Figure 35)
• Manifolds for cracks, broken flanges, and gasket
surface damage.
• Alignment of manifold flanges^ Use a straight edge
and feeler gage (figure 35). If the flanges do hot
align, the manifold is warped and should be
replaced.
CAMSHAFT
Important
• Whenever the camshaft needs to be replaced, a
new set of valve lifters must also be installed.

Camshaft lobes and journals for scratches, pitting,
scoring, and wear.
