Figure 19 - Removing the Cylinder Ridge
Important
• Mark the relationship of the pressure plate
assembly to the flywheel to assure proper
balance during assembly.
2. Flywheel attaching bolts.
3. Retainer.
4. Flywheel.
Clean
• The thread adhesive must be thoroughly
removed from the flywheel bolts and bolt
holes.
• Use care not to damage the camshaft bearings
with the cam when withdrawing the camshaft.
2. Camshaft.
[jy| Inspect
• For inspection of camshaft and replacement of
camshaft
bearings,
refer
to
“ Camshaft
Inspection” and “ Camshaft Bearings” in this
section.

CLEANING, INSPECTION AND REPAIR
1. Mark main bearing caps.
2. Main bearing bolts and caps.
3. Crankshaft.
4. Upper main bearing inserts.
5. Crankshaft rear oil seal from crankshaft.
A solvent tank large enough to hold the larger
engine parts will be needed, as well as various bristle
brushes and gasket scrapers. A source of compressed
air will also be helpful in the cleaning operations.
Special tools are listed and illustrated throughout
this section, with a complete listing at the end of the
section. These tools (or their equivalents) are specially
designed to quickly and safely accomplish the
operations for which they are intended. They should
not be used in operations for which they are not
designed. These special tools, when they are properly
used, will also minimize possible damage to engine
components.
Some precision measuring tools are required for
inspection of certain critical components. These
include micrometers, torque wrenches, feeler gages,
dial indicator set, etc. The inspection work, when
performed with the proper methods and tools, is most
important.
The rebuilt engine cannot be expected to perform
properly if parts worn beyond acceptable limits are
reused.
CYLINDER BLOCK
Disassemble
1. EGR and adapter from cylinder head. Refer to
Driveability, Emissions, and Electrical Diagrams
and Diagnosis manual for this model.
2. Cooling jacket plugs.
- Obtain a suitable self-threading screw.
- Drill a hole into the plug.
