Remove or Disconnect
1.
Recover the refrigerant using J 39500-G M .
2.
Loosen and reposition com pressor in m ounting brackets,
if necessary.
3.
Remove clutch plate and hub assem bly from com pressor
as described in m inor repairs.
4.
Remove the shaft seal retainer ring, using snap ring
pliers J 5403 (Fig. 21).
5.
Thoroughly clean inside o f com pressor neck area
surrounding the shaft, the exposed portion o f the seal, the
retainer ring groove and the shaft itself. Any dirt or
foreign m aterial getting into com pressor m ay cause
dam age.
6.
Fully engage the knurled tangs of Seal R em over-
Installer J 2312 8 -A into the recessed portion o f the Seal
by turning the handle clockw ise. R em ove the Seal from
the com pressor with a ro tary -p u llin g m otion (Fig. 22).
Discard the seal. The handle m ust be hand- tightened
securely. Do not use a w rench or pliers.
7.
Remove and discard the seal seat O -ring from the
com pressor neck using O -ring rem over J 9553-01,
Figure 20.
8.
Recheck the shaft and inside o f the com pressor neck for
dirt or foreign m aterial and be sure these areas are
perfectly clean before installing new parts.

Thoroughly clean O -ring seal groove in front head.
NOTICE:
Seals should not be re-used. A lw ays use a
new specification service seal on rebuild (Fig. 18). Be
sure that the seal to be installed is not scratched or
dam aged in anyway. M ake sure that the seal seat and seal
are free o f lint and dirt that could dam age the seal surface
or prevent sealing.
Install or Connect
1.
Dip the new seal seat O -ring in clean 525 viscosity
refrigerant oil and assem ble onto O -ring installer
J 33011, Figure 20.
2.
Insert the O-ring installer J 33011 into the com pressor
neck until the installer “bottom s” . Low er the m oveable
slide o f the O-ring installer to release the O -ring into the
seal O -ring lower groove. (The com pressor neck top
groove is for the shaft seal retainer ring.) R otate the
installer to seat the O -ring and rem ove the installer.
3.
Dip the new seal in clean 525 viscosity refrigerant oil and
assem ble seal to Seal Installer J 2 3 1 2 8 -A , by turning
handle clockwise. The stam ped steel case side o f the
lip seal must be engaged with knurled tangs of installer
so that flared-out side o f lip seal is facing and
installed towards the com pressor. Install seal protector
J 34614, in the seal lip and place over the com pressor
shaft, Figure 22, and push the seal in place with a
rotary motion or place the seal protector J 34014 over
end of com pressor shaft, Figure 22, and slide the new
