General Instructions

GI-19
Calcium-based lubricating grease has fat and lime as the raw material and has four
consistency designations of 1, 2, 3 and 4. Calcium-based lubricating grease is applicable within a
temperature range of -10
℃
to 60
℃
. Its advantage is high water resistance. It is applicable to the
parts with a high temperature and easily get contact with water.
b)
Sodium-based lubricating grease
Sodium-based lubricating grease has sodium soaps as the thickeners. It includes two
consistency designations of 2 and 3. Sodium-based lubricating grease is applicable to high
working temperatures, over 120
℃
at the maximum. It has a good wear resistance but poor water
resistance. It will be easily emulsified and deteriorated when in contact with water. For that
reason, it is applicable to the parts with a high working temperature but out of contact with water.
c)
General-purpose lithium-based lubricating grease for automobiles
Lithium-based lubricating grease has lithium soaps as the thickeners and includes only one
consistency designation of 2. Lithium-based lubricating grease has a wide range of applicable
temperatures, i.e. from -30
℃
to 120
℃
. In addition, the lubricating grease also has good
comprehensive properties, including wear resistance, water resistance and antirust. It is
extensively used for automobiles now.

Automobile working fluids
Automobile brake fluid (brake oil)
1)
Requirements on properties of automobile brake fluid
a)
High-temperature resistance to vapor lock: the heat generated during braking will easily
cause the brake system temperature to rise. If the temperature approaches or exceeds the
boiling point of the brake fluid, vapors will be created in the brake system so that the proper
operation of the brake fluid will be affected. This is called vapor lock. In order to guarantee
the proper and effective operation of the brake system, it is necessary to ensure that the
brake fluid has a high boiling point and resistance to vapor locks.
b)
Good low-temperature fluidity and temperature-viscosity characteristic: in order to
guarantee that the brake system works properly within the variation range of atmospheric
temperature, it is necessary to guarantee good fluidity and moderate viscosity of brake fluids
at the lowest atmospheric temperature in winter.
c)
No corrosion to rubber seals: the brake fluids shall not cause any chemical damage to the
rubber seals in the brake system. Otherwise, the brake system may fail and cause very severe
consequences.
d)
No corrosion to metals: the brake fluids shall not corrode any metal component in contact in
order to guarantee the reliability and durability of the system.
2)
Varieties and properties of automobile brake fluid
a)
Properties of alcohol ether brake fluid:
This type of brake fluid consists of three main components, i.e. basic fluid, lubricant and
additive. Different ingredients of the basic fluid mainly determine the vapor lock resistance and
low-temperature fluidity of the brake fluid; the lubricant works to improve the lubricating
conditions; the additive mainly works to reduce the fluid’s corrosiveness and swelling property
for rubbers. The major deficiency of this type of brake fluid is its high hydroscopicity. Increase
of water content in brake fluids will reduce the boiling point.
b)
Grease synthetic brake fluid: this type of brake fluid has apparently improved
hydroscopicity and thus enhanced stability at different working temperatures. Its boiling
point won’t be reduced due to long-term operation in rainy and humid regions.
3)
Selection of automobile brake fluid
a)
Criteria of selection: temperature, humidity, road conditions and brake intensity;
