Tire Labeling
Federal law requires that tire manufacturers provide standardized
information molded into the sidewall of all tires sold in the U.S.
This includes the tire’s size, construction, various capacities
(max. pressure, load, speed) and the
Tire Identification Number
.
US DOT Tire Identification Number (TIN)
The
Tire Identification Number
is provided for safety standard
certification and in the event of a recall.
More than just a serial
number, this code identifies the specific production run of a tire.
• The
TIN
always begins with “DOT” usually followed by
10-12 numbers, letters, or symbols.
• The
fist
two (2) numbers or letters following DOT,
are the
plant code
where the tire was manufactured.
• The
last
four (4) numbers show the
week
and
year
the tire was built.
For example:
◦
3119 = the 31st week of 2019
.
• The other characters in the TIN are codes used at the
tire manufacturer’s discretion and vary by company.
