Note:
As long as this dead center remains in
the chuck, the point of the center will remain
true to the spindle centerline. The point will
have to be refinished whenever the center is
removed and then returned to the chuck.
3. Install center in tailstock.
4. Attach lathe dog to test stock from Step 1,
then mount it between centers, as shown in
Figure below.
— If test stock is thinner at tailstock end,
move tailstock toward back of lathe

8. Repeat Steps 5–7 until desired accuracy is
achieved.

6. Mount test or dial indicator so plunger is on
tailstock quill.
7. Use calipers to measure both ends of
workpiece.
