8.3 Operational Checks
It is important to observe the general performance of the freezer and make correc-
tions as necessary.
1.
Since cycle times, freezer capa c-
ity and product quality rely upon
the refrigeration pressure set-
tings, it is important to use a
calibrated set of refrigeration
gauges when checking and
adjusting refrigeration pressures.
Some refrigeration wholesalers
offer equipment to check and
calibrate your gauges. Adjusting
gauges to “0 psig” is not a true
calibration, they could be out of
calibration as much as 3 to 4
psig.
When set correctly and the
freezer has not been dispensed
from, the freezer will have off
times ranging from 10–30
minutes with 30–60 second run
times. While dispensing the
suction pressure must be set
between
16-17
psig, 17 is
preferred. This is controlled by
the automatic expansion valve
feeding the cylinder. Turning the
expansion valve stem clockwise
increases the pressure.
Adjustments should not be made
more than
0.5 psig or 1/8
th
of a
turn at a time.
2.
Check for mix leaks around the
dispensing head and the beater
shaft seal in the rear of the
freezer cylinder.
3.
The freezer should automatically
start the compressor and beater
motor when the spigot is opened
and keep both running for 5
additional seconds when the
spigot is closed. Providing the
freezer is not refrigerating be-
cause the cylinder thermostat will
cause the compressor and beater
motor to run until satisfied. Check
the adjustable compressor delay
on break time delay by drawing
product and timing the run time after
the spigot is closed. The delay on
break time delays are located on
the back wall of the electrical box
above the dispensing head. To
adjust the time delays turn the
adjustment stem clockwise to
increase the delay time. The time
delays are factory set for 5 seconds.
4.
The freezer is also equipped with a
beater motor recycle timer. This
allows the beater motor to run an
additional 15 seconds after the
compressor shuts off. It also will
start the beater motor every 31min-
utes after the last beater motor
cycle. The timer will always reset at
the end of dispensing or a thermo-
stat cycle. The recycle timers are
located in the contactor box on the
right side of the freezer. They have
adjustable on and off time potenti-
ometers and are factory set for 15
seconds on and 31 minutes off .
Note: If the selector switch is turned
to the “OFF” position and placed
back to “AUTO” the beater motor
should run for 15 seconds or the
run time set by the recycle timer.
This is a quick way to check the on
time setting when the product is
cold enough to satisfy the thermo-
stat.
NOTE:
If the cylinder thermostat
calls for additional refrigeration,
these components may continue to
run and will shut off when the
thermostat has been satisfied.
5.
Slowly dispense some product from
the freezer. The product should flow
smoothly and dispense at 18°F
(-8°C). If the product comes out in
spurts, slowly, or if there are pop-
ping sounds, check to see that the
mix pump is operating properly. See
pump manual.
