Use an A-type receptacle with an A-type plug. An A-type receptacle is usually on a host or a hub
and functions as the output of the host system or hub system; an A-type plug usually connects to its
corresponding A-type receptacle on a host or a hub.

Use a B-type receptacle with a B-type plug. A B-type receptacle usually functions as the input of a
device; a B-type plug usually connects to its corresponding B-type receptacle on a device.

The differences between the two types of connectors ensure that you can correctly connect the USB
cables.
In the network as shown in
, a standard detachable USB cable specified in the USB
protocols is needed. One end of the cable must be an A-type plug, and the other end of the cable must
be a B-type plug:

The A-type plug of the cable is plugged in the A-type receptacle on the host.

The B-type plug of the cable is plugged in the B-type receptacle on the router.
Connecting the Router and the Host
To connect the router to the host, you need to enable the USB device port of the router, and then
connect the router to the host by using a USB cable physically. For the first time of connection, the
Windows operating system may ask whether you want to install the driver. Because the Windows XP
operating system supports the USB mass storage medium, you can use the automatic installation
function in the
Hardware Update Wizard
to search and install the hardware disk. After the installation,
open the
My Computer
folder and you can see the
Removable Disk
icon, and meantime, the LED of
the USB device port on the router is on, and then the router can be used as a USB mass storage
medium.
