nterface.
MIDI is the musical instrument industry standard for allowing electronic musical instruments to communicate with one another, as well as
with other elctronic devices such as computers, sequencers, effects, lighting and sound reinforcement gear, etc. In addition, instruments made
by different manufacturers to effectively communicate with each other.
Many types of data can be transmitted and received, including performance information, settings of parameters, and global commands.
WHAT IS “USB?”
USB is an acronym for

us. It is an industry standard for allowing different types of electronic devices to exchange informa-
tion. It is widely used on computers, musical instruments, smartphones, computer peripherals such as disk drives, printers, scanners, etc. The
XK-5 has two USB ports - one Type “A” and one Type “B.” The type”A” port is for connecting a USB Flash Drive, and the type “B” port is
used to connect to a host device such as a computer.
MIDI/USB JACKS ON THE XK-5
❶
MIDI OUT PORT
This allows you to send MIDI information to an external device, or to record performances and controls to an external sequencer.
❷
MIDI IN 1 / PEDAL PORT
❸
MIDI IN 2 / OTHER PORT
These two jacks are used to control the XK-5 from external MIDI equipment.
❹
USB FLASH DRIVE PORT
This allows you to use a USB Flash Drive to store Setups, Patches, etc., or to upgrade the system software.
❺
USB TO HOST PORT
This allows you to connect to a computer.
WHAT MIDI CAN DO ON THE XK-5
On the XK-5, the MIDI ports are intended to do the following:
w
Use a MIDI keyboard/Pedal Clavier to expand the versatility of play.
w
Control an external sound generator such as a synthesizer or sampler.
w
Record/playback the performance on an external sequencer or computer.
For easier access to those settings, the XK-5 is equipped with “MIDI Templates.” These are explained more fully on the next page.
WHAT “USB TO HOST” CAN DO ON THE XK-5
On the XK-5, the USB TO HOST jack is intended to do the following:
w
Sending / receiving MIDI data (Keyboard channel Upper, Lower, Pedal and system exclusive messages).
w
Sending an analog audio stream the same as a LINE OUT jack. (See the paragraph below, “USB AUDIO CLASS 1.0”)
w
Sending / receiving Setup files.
w
Sending / receiving the System files.
WHAT IS “USB AUDIO?”
“USB Audio” is a standard for allowing audio to be sent and received via a USB interface. The XK-5 complies with “USB AUDIO CLASS
1.0” meaning that when it is connected to a computer via USB, it can send and receive both MIDI data and an analog audio stream without
having to install a proprietary device driver - “native support,” in other words..
The Windows (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8.1 and 10), Linux and OSX operating systems provide native support for USB Audio Class 1.0.
