OPERATION
Make sure that both vehicles have the same polarity, i.e. that both vehicles have either positive or
negative earth. All vehicles manufactured after 1980 have negative earth.
Check that both batteries have the same rated voltage.
Turn off all electrical equipment in both vehicles, including the ignition. Put the gearbox in neutral,
or P for automatic transmission. Apply the handbrake. Make sure the vehicles do not touch each
other.
Connecting the jump leads
Connect the RED lead to the charged battery's positive terminal (+).
Connect the other end of the RED lead to the discharged battery's positive terminal (+).
Connect the BLACK lead to the charged battery's negative terminal (-).
Connect the other end of the BLACK lead to an unpainted earth point in the engine compartment in
the vehicle with the discharged battery. Select a point as far from the battery, fuel system or brake
lines as possible. Risk of fire due to sparking.
NOTE!
Never smoke near the battery.
Starting
Make sure the leads cannot come into contact with any moving parts.
Start the vehicle with the charged battery. Let it idle for a minute.
Start the vehicle with the discharged battery. Let it idle for a minute. The jump leads must not get
hot. If they do, the engine must be stopped and the leads allowed to cool.
Disconnecting the leads
Stop the engine in the vehicle with the charged battery.
Disconnect the leads in the reverse order to when you connected them.
Make sure you are not in contact with any moving parts when disconnecting the leads.
