3xDS3/4xDS3 and 155 Optical/Electrical
Configurations
•
To minimize jitter accumulation in a 3xDS3 system, back-to back
terminals at sites where no DS3 is required should use HLM-155 units.
•
The 3xDS3 unit is compatible with the HLM-155 unit. However, the
3xDS3 unit is not compatible with OEM SONET-DS3 multiplexers.
•
The HLM-3xDS3 unit and the HLM-155 operate only in a terminal
radio.
•
The HLM-155 unit can be either protected or unprotected in hot
standby Constellation terminals, depending on whether the OEM
multiplexer is protected.
•
At back-to-back terminals, when the receive DS3 signals are passed
directly from radio to radio without passing through external
terminating equipment, in a 3xDS3 unit the maximum number of hops
is limited to 15 because of the accumulation of jitter. After 15 hops, the
DS3 must be terminated. The 4xDS3 unit allows for an unlimited
number of hops.
•
When the 3xDS3/4xDS3 system is configured in an add-drop mode, T1
signals may pass through no more that 8 consecutive add-drop sites
before being terminated. In the 4xDS3 unit, only DS3 channels 1, 2, or
3 can be selected for a limited add-drop configuration.
It is recommended that if you need access to a T1 at sequential sites that
you alternate which T2 you drop to avoid accumulated jitter on the
undropped T2s. This also will eliminate the need to have an extra M12.
The DS1 signals have to be completely dropped every 8 hops in order to
eliminate the accumulated jitter.
