A column is 9 cells tall.  A filled-in column has one of each digit. 
That means each digit appears only once in the column.    There are 9 
columns in the grid, and the same applies to all the columns. 

  

A “region” contains 9 sub-grids (cells) in a 3x3 layout. 
It works the same as a column.   

 

 

A row is 9 cells wide.    Same rules apply as the columns.   

 

 

There is no math involved. Nothing has to add up to anything.    You solve 
the puzzle with logic and reasoning. 

For example, look at the middle “region” at the top of the puzzle – the one 
with the 5 and the 9. It does not have a 3. 

 

 

But the region to the right has a 3.  The 3 is not just the 3 for the 
right-region, but the 3 for the whole top row as well.
