Instruction Manual for QuickSet
The QuickSet is a peripheral device for connecting to the Time Code Generators ZZG5 and ZZG6 of HKW-
Elektronik GmbH. Its purpose is to store complex settings of the generator and to recall these settings simply on a
single key press. Because of the simply handling the QuickSet is especially applicable for using in manufactoring
environments for testing of units under test with different signal parameters.
1. Layout and Connection of the QuickSet
The QuickSet must be connected to the RJ45-GPS-connector of the time code generator ZZG5/ZZG6 using a normal
straight through (uncrossed) network cable. On the topside of the QuickSet four buttons and four light-emitting
diodes (LED) are mounted. Four additional buttons and four additional LEDs can be connected to the D-Sub-
Connector mounted at the side of the QuickSet. Each button recalls a determined complex setting of the time code
generator out of the internal QuickSet Memory and transmits this setting to the generator. The corresponding LED
identifies the latest performed setting. So, using 8 buttons and 8 LEDs, 8 different settings of the generator are
storable and recallable. Powering of the QuickSet with 12 V dc is performed via the network cable out of the
generator ZZG5/ZZG6.
2. Preparing the ZZG5/ZZG6
- firmware necessary for the ZZG5/ZZG6: 1.26 R
If a firmware other than 1.26R (for example 1.26 without "R", or a lower version) is contained, a software update is
necessary. For the ZZG5 only the manufacturer of the ZZG5 can update the software due to the lack of the USB
interface. Updating the firmware of the ZZG6 is very simple, using the USB interface.
For connecting the QuickSet to the time code generator, some special settings are required for the correct function of
the Quickset:
- Menu GPS: Sync msec must be "Off"
- Menu Antenna Factor: must be "Off"
- Output voltage level display must not be in dB-units but in absolute voltage units
- The test signal menu of the ZZG5/ZZG6 must not be chosen.
The last condition is automatically given after turning on the generator. The other settings are to be executed only
once because the ZZG5/ZZG6 storage of settings is nonvolatile.
The Quickset is to be connected to the generator using a network cable.
3. Operation of the Quickset
For protection against accidental overwriting of the memory contents there are several operating modes
implemented, which are determined after turning on the generator or after connecting the QuickSet to the generator.
By simply turning on the generator or connecting the QuickSet to the generator the QuickSet always operates in
normal mode. In normal mode changing of the memory contents is not possible. For changing the memory contents
another operating mode must be chosen by pressing a determined button while turning on the generator or
connecting the Quickset. The other operatimg modes are the so-called storage modes. There are two storage modes,
one including setting of time, and the other without storing the time. Sometimes it is necessary to change signal
parameters only, but the time of the generator must be kept. In other cases it is necessary to start the generator always
with the same well defined time. For this reason there exist two storage modes, which include or exclude the time
setting.
