Pilot Screw Adjustment
Idle Drop Procedure
•
If the engine must be running to do some work,
make sure the area is well ventilated. Never run the
engine in an enclosed area.
•
The exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide
gas that may cause loss of consciousness and may
lead to death.
NOTE
•
Make sure the carbu retor synch ron ization is with i n
specification before pilot screw adjustment (page 5-
1 4).
•
The pilot screw is factory pre-set and no adjustment
is necessary u n less it is replaced.
•
The engine must be wa rm for accu rate adjustment.
Ten m i n utes of stop-and-go riding is sufficient.
•
U se a tac h o m ete r with g ra d u at i o n of 50 rpm o r
s m a l l e r t h a t w i l l a c c u rate l y i n d i c a t e a 50 r p m
change.
1. Using the special pilot screw wrench, turn each pi lot
screw clockwise u nti l it seats lightly. Then back it out
to the specification.
CAUTION
•
Damage to the pilot screw seat will occur if the pilot
screw is tightened against the seat.

49 states, California type: 07MMA - MV9010A
Initial Opening: 49 states type: 2-1 /2 turns out
California, Canadian type: 2-3/8 turns out
2. Warm u p the engine to operati ng tem peratu re.
3. Stop the engine and attach the tachometer according
to the man ufactu rer's instruction.
4. Sta rt the engine and adj ust the idle speed with the
th rottle stop screw knob.
Idle Speed:
49 states type: 1 ,000
±
100 rpm
California, Canadian type: 1,100
±
1 00 rpm
5. Tu rn N o . 1 ca rbu retor pilot screw in or out slowly to
obtai n the highest engine speed.
6. Perform step 5 for a l l the ca rbu retor pilot screws.
7. Lig htly open the th rottle 2
-
3 ti mes, adjust the idle
speed with the th rottle stop screw.
8. Turn N o . 1 carbu retor pilot screw in g radually u ntil the
engine speed drops 50 rpm.
9. Tu rn No.1 carbu retor pilot screw cou nterclockwise to
the fi nal opening from the position in step 8.
Final Opening:
49
states type: 3/4 turns out from step 8
California, Canadian type: 1 /4 turns out from step 8
1 0. Perform steps 8 and 9 for the No. 2, 3 and 4 carbu retor
pilot screws.
