3   Installing Microsoft Network Drivers

NDIS 2.01, 3.1 and 4 Drivers for Windows 95 and Windows 95 OSR2

NDIS 2.01, 3.1 and 4 Drivers for Windows 95 and Windows
95 OSR2

Microsoft Windows 95 supports both NDIS 2.01 and NDIS 3.1 drivers. In order to
install the NDIS 4 driver, Windows 95 version 4.00.950 B must be running. This
version is also known as Windows 95 OSR2 (OEM Software Release 2).

To determine which version of Windows you are running, right click on

My

Computer

 and select

Properties

. The

General

tab will show the Windows version.

If it lists the system as 4.00.950 B (Windows 95 OSR2) the NDIS 4 driver can be
installed safely on your computer. (Drivers are located in the WIN95SR2.X
directory.)

If it lists the system as 4.00.950 or 4.00.950a you must install the NDIS 3.1 driver.
(Drivers are located in the WIN95 directory.)

The NDIS 2.01 (real mode) driver can be installed on any Windows 95 system,
regardless the operating system version.

The directory structure provided on the LAN Disk has been setup for automatic
installation. This section provides a brief explanation regarding the driver
installation.

Installing the NDIS Drivers on Windows 95 Versions not Preloaded
by HP

If you are not using an HP preload version of Windows 95, the operating system
detects the HP Ethernet Family Adapter as an AMD adapter during the Windows 95
startup phase. Consequently, Windows 95 automatically installs the default AMD
drivers using the NETAMD.INF configuration file. If you then try to install the HP
drivers from the LAN disk, Windows 95 will still use the default AMD drivers.

In order to install the HP drivers for the HP Ethernet Family Adapter, you must
rename the NETAMD.INF file

before

 installing the HP drivers.
