The BIOS in Your Computer
What Is the BIOS?
The
BIOS
has two main roles:
•
It tests and configures the computer’s hardware components during the
POST
, and lets you perform further
configuration by using the
Setup
program.
•
It provides the link between the software running on your computer, which has been written to be independent of any
particular computer, and your computer’s hardware (the hard disk, the keyboard, the display, and so on).
The BIOS is part of the System
ROM
and is stored in a chip on the system board. A computer’s BIOS is specific to that
computer.
What Can I Do with the
BIOS?
You can configure certain aspects of your computer by using the
Setup
program which is part of the BIOS. Refer to
“The
HP Setup Program” on page 25
for more information about the
Setup
program.
