Removing and Replacing Server Fans
There are four server fans to keep the server cool when it is running. The server fans are hot-swappable,
allowing you to replace a single fan at a time while the server is running.
CAUTION
When hot-swapping the fans (the server is running), the top metal cover must be replaced
within 30 minutes to prevent components from overheating. If the top metal cover is not
replaced within 30 minutes, the server automatically shuts down.
If the server has shut down, replace the top metal cover before restarting the server.
Removing a Server Fan
Step 1.
Extend the server from the rack. See “Extending the Server from the Rack” on page 49.
Step 2.
Remove the top metal cover. See “Removing the Top Metal Cover” on page 50.
Step 3.
Remove fan 1A, 1B, 2 or 3 from the server grasping the appropriate fan and lifting it out of the fan
socket. See Figure 4-9, Figure 4-10, and Figure 4-11 for more information.
