Operating the Switch

To determine whether POST completed without errors, verify that all LEDs return to a normal state
after POST is complete. If one or more LEDs do not return to a normal state, and this is not due to
the switch being set to beacon, see
Interpreting LED Activity
on
page 3-1
(for more information
about beaconing, refer to the Fabric OS Procedures Guide).
Note:
If the switch prompt does not display when POST completes, trying pressing ENTER. If
the switch prompt still does not display, POST was not successfully completed and the
switch should be returned to your HP account representative for repair.
Any errors detected during POST are written to the system log, accessible through the
errShow
command. For more information about error messages, refer to the Fabric OS Reference.
For more specific information about POST, see
POST Specifications
on
page A-6
.
Maintaining the Switch
Neither the FC Entry Switch 8B nor FC Switch 8B requires any regular physical maintenance and
is designed to minimize the chance of failure.
Diagnostic Tests
Diagnostic tests are provided to help troubleshoot the hardware and the firmware. The diagnostic
tests provided on the switch include tests of internal connections and circuitry, fixed media, and the
SFP modules and fiber optic cables in use. The tests are implemented by command, either through
a telnet session or through a terminal set up for a serial connection to the switch. Some tests require
the ports to be connected by external cables, to allow diagnostics to verify the serializer/deserializer
interface, as well as the attached SFP and cable.
All diagnostic tests are run at link speeds of both 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps. For information about the
specific diagnostic tests and how to run them, refer to the Fabric OS Procedures Guide.
Note:
The transmit and receive speed of the links may be temporarily locked to a specific speed
during diagnostic testing.
