Clear the area to be cultivated
of everything that could get
in the cultivator’s way – sticks, stones, washing lines etc.
Any long grass should be cut and cleared,
as this will clog
the tines and reduce the working depth.
Ensure the soil is in a suitable condition to be cultivated,
heavy soil should be neither too wet or too dry.
Move the cultivator
onto the plot,
set the machine on
firm level ground and check fuel and oil levels
(see
Equipment care).
It is essential to familiarise yourself with all the controls
before starting.
Adjust the cultivation depth
using the handle on top of the
rear cover. the more you raise it, the deeper the cultivator will
dig, up to a maximum of about 200mm.
C8…
Adjust the handles
- up, down, or sideways (to avoid
walking on newly cultivated soil). Move the central lever back,
adjust the handles to the desired position and release the lever
to lock in position.
The unit is fitted with an operators’ presence lever
(OPL),
the engine will only run if the OPL is depressed.
Now,
squeeze the clutch and OPL togethe
r,
lock with the
spring clip
, and use the left hand gear lever to
engage
neutral gear
(marked N on most models).
Open the fuel tap and set the choke
- fully closed if starting
from cold, half closed if the engine is warm.
Set the throttle to the halfway position
,
two or three brisk
pulls on the starter cord should now start the engine.
Once
the engine has
warmed up, fully open the choke
and
reset the throttle
to idling speed.
Bolans Horse..
Ensure the drive lever is disengaged,
(set this by raising the
lever) or the engine will not start.
Open the fuel tap and set the choke
- fully closed (two
clicks) if starting from cold, half closed (one click) if the engine
is warm.
Set the throttle to the ‘fast’ position
(rabbit),
then two or
three brisk pulls on the starter cord should now start the
engine.
Once
the engine has
warmed up, fully open the choke
and
reset the throttle
to idling speed.

Hold the OPL and clutch lever together, select forward
gear
(marked with a forward facing arrow) and
set the
throttle half way.
The throttle can be increased, but you are
advised to start at half throttle until you are used to the way the
machine handles.
Slowly release the clutch
and
the cultivator will move
forward.
To change gear
(forward or reverse),
squeeze the clutch
lever
and
set the throttle to idle. Select
the required
gear,
slowly release the clutch
and prepare to move off as already
described.
To STOP in an emergency, release the OPL.
To engage the tines, squeeze the clutch lever and set
the throttle to idle. Select tine drive by moving the tine
selection lever forward.
Note that when selecting reverse, the tines must be
disengaged.
The cultivator gearbox is set so that if reverse is
selected when the tines are in drive, the tines will be disengaged.
In addition,
tine drive cannot be selected if the unit is in
reverse gear. This is a safety feature of the machine.
Bolans Horse...
Ensure the drive lever is in the disengaged position.
Move the speed selection lever backward for slow or
forward for fast
(note there is an intermediate position for
neutral). and
set the throttle half way.
This can be
increased, but you are advised to start at half throttle and in the

GENERAL SAFETY
Exhaust Danger
NEVER operate petrol engines indoors or in a
confined space.
The exhaust contains gases that can kill.
Fuel Safety

Never smoke or allow naked lights into the area
while refuelling.
Never inhale fuel vapour.
ALWAYS mop up any spillage as quickly as possible,
and change your clothes if you get fuel on yourself.
