4–4 Operational states
A user–initiated acquisition (with a
GO
or
GO RX
), the acquisition
sweep starts at the center frequency, fcenter. The center frequency
where acquisition sweep starts can be calculated by fcenter =
fnom + foffset. The nominal frequency is entered with the
RFQ
command and the frequency offset is entered with the
AO
command.
Acquisition starts differently whenever it is initiated by a
redundancy switch or by an AUT ON setting. Whenever these
conditions cause acquisition to start, it can generally be assumed
that some modem has previously been tracking a signal.
In Figure 4-2 the modem first looks for a valid receive signal at
the frequency where it was previously located, ftrack. If a signal
is not found there, the modem will then begin sweeping for a
receive signal starting from the center frequency. The modem
requires receipt of a minimum of 10000 symbols to determine
whether a carrier is valid. This determines the time which the
modem spends at each frequency during acquisition sweep.
A transition from acquisition to tracking takes place only when the
signal is locked for two consecutive samples. After the modem
moves into track mode, the receive signal is monitored at one
second intervals.
The track frequency offset and Eb/No are written into RAM at
periodic intervals. An average of these values can be retrieved
with the ST command. Also, every 6 hours, the track frequency
offset is saved to EEPROM. The track frequency offset is also
passed to the redundant modem during redundancy polling.
When the modem is tracking a signal and loses lock, it does not
immediately begin acquisition sweep. Instead, the modem enters
fade mode where it waits for the receive carrier to reappear at the
current frequency. If the signal does not appear before the fade
timeout expires, the modem will enter the acquisition stage and
begin to sweep for a valid receive signal. The fade timeout value is
user configurable with the ATF command.
While in the idle state, the UMOD is operational, but is not
sending or receiving data. Modulator carrier power is set to off.
