Forecas-
tle:
Also fo’c’sle or fo’csle. Pronounced fo’csle.
The most forward below decks area of a
vessel.
Forestay:
The foremost stay, runnng from the mast-
head to the stemhead, to whch the head-
sal s hanked.
Free-
board:
Vertcal dstance between the waterlne
and the top of the deck.
Gale:
A storm wth a wnd speed between 34 to
40 knots.
Galley:
The ktchen area on a boat.
Genoa:
A large headsal, n varous szes, whch
overlaps the mansal and s hosted n
lght to fresh wnds on all ponts of sal-
ng.
Gimbals:
Two concentrc rngs, pvoted at rght
angles, whch keeps objects horzontal
despte the boat’s moton, e. g. compass
and cooker.

Position-
ing Sys-
tem:
GPS for short. A system of satelltes that
allows one’s poston to be calculated wth
great accuracy by the use of an electronc
recever.
Go about:
To turn the boat through the eye of the
wnd to change tack.
Goose-
neck:
The fttng attachng the boom to the mast,
allowng t to move n all drectons.
Goosew-
ing:
To boom-out the headsal to wndward on
a run by usng a whsker pole to hold the
sal on the opposte sde to the mansal.
Great cir-
cle route:
A course that s the shortest dstance
between two ponts; the center of a great
crcle s the center of the earth.

wich
Merid-
ian Time
(GMT):
A tme standard that s not affected by
tme zones or seasons. Now called
Coordnated Unversal Tme (UTC).
Ground
swells:
Swells that become shorter and steeper
as they approach the shore due to shal-
low water.
Ground
tackle:
General term used for anchorng gear.
Guard
rail:
A metal ral ftted around the boat to pre-
vent the crew fallng overboard.
Gudgeon:
A rudder fttng. It s the eye nto whch the
pntle fts.
Guy:
A steadyng rope for a spar; a spnnaker
guy controls the fore and aft poston of
the spnnaker pole; the foreguy holds the
spnnaker pole forward and down.
Gybe:
To change from one tack to another by
turnng the stern through the wnd.
Hail:
To attempt to contact another boat or
shore, ether by voce or rado.
Halyard:
Rope used to host and lower sals.
Hand rail:
Hand hold. Usually along the cabn top or
ladder.
Hank:
Fttng used to attach the luff of a sal to
a stay.
Harbor-
master:
The ndvdual who s n charge of a har-
bor.
Hatch:
A sldng or hnged openng n the deck,
provdng people wth access to the cabn
or space below.
Haul out:
Remove a boat from the water.
Hawes
pipe:
see Navel ppe.
Hawse
hole:
A hole n the hull for moorng lnes to run
through.
Hawser:
A rope that s very large n dameter, usu-
ally used when dockng large vessels.
Hazard:
An object that mght not allow safe opera-
ton. A group of rocks just under the water
or a submerged wreck could be a navga-
tonal hazard.
Head:
The tolet and tolet room n a vessel.
Head
seas:
Waves comng from the front of the ves-
sel.
Head up:
To turn the bow more drectly nto the eye
of the wnd. The opposte of fallng off.
Headfoil:
A streamlned surround to a forestay, wth
a groove nto whch a headsal luff sldes.
Head-top-
wind:
When the bows are pontng rght nto the
wnd.
Headway:
The forward moton of a vessel through
the water.
Heave-to:
To back the jb and lash the tller to lee-
ward; used n heavy weather to encour-
age the boat to le quetly and to reduce
headway.
Heaving
line:
A lght lne sutable for throwng ashore.
