Heaving
to:
To slow or stop the forward moton of the
boat, such as when n heavy seas.
Heavy
seas:
When the water has large or breakng
waves n stormy condtons.
Heavy
weather:
Stormy condtons, ncludng rough, hgh
seas and strong wnds.
Heel:
To lean over to one sde.
High tide:
The pont of a tde when the water s the
hghest. The opposte of low tde.
Hitch:
A knot used to attach a lne to a cleat or
other object.
Horizon:
Where the water and sky or ground and
sky appear to ntersect.
Hull:
The man structural body of the boat, not
ncludng the deck, keel, mast, or cabn.
The part that keeps the water out of the
boat.
Hurri-
cane:
A strong tropcal revolvng storm of force
12 or hgher. In the northern hemsphere;
hurrcanes revolve n a clockwse drec-
ton. In the southern hemsphere they
revolve counterclockwse and are known
as typhoons.
Inboard:
(1) toward the center of the boat. (2) an
engne that s mounted nsde the boat.
Inflatable:
A dnghy or raft that can be nflated for use
or deflated for easy stowage.
Isobars:
Lnes on a weather map jonng places of
equal atmospherc pressure.
Jackstay:
A lne runnng fore and aft, on both sdes
of the boat, to whch safety harnesses are
clpped.
Jury:
A temporary devce to replace lost or
damaged gear.
Keel:
A flat surface bult nto the bottom of the
boat to reduce the leeway caused by the
wnd pushng aganst the sde of the boat.
A keel also usually has some ballast to
help keep the boat uprght and prevent t
from heelng too much.
Kicking
strap:
A lne used to pull the boom down, to
keep t horzontal, partcularly on a reach
or run.
Knot:
(1) a speed of one nautcal mle per hour.
(2) a method of attachng a rope or lne to
tself, another lne or a fttng.
Land
breeze:
A wnd movng from the land to the water
due to temperature changes n the eve-
nng.
Lanyard:
A short lne attached to one object, such
as a knfe, wth whch t s secured to
another.
Lash:
To te somethng wth a lne.
Launch:
(1) to put a boat n the water. (2) a small
boat used to ferry people to and from a
larger vessel.
Lead line:
A lne wth a weght on the end used to
measure depth. The lead s dropped nto
the water and marks on the lne are read
to determne the current water depth. The
lead usually has a cavty to return a sam-
ple of the bottom type (mud, sand, etc.).
League:
Three nautcal mles.
Lee
shore:
A shore on to whch the wnd blows.
Leech:
1, the after edge of a trangle sal; 2, both
sde edges of a square sal.
Leehelm:
The tendency of a boat to bear away from
the wnd.
Leeward:
The drecton away from the wnd. Opposte
of wndward.
Leeway:
The sdeways movement of a boat away
from the wnd, usually unwanted. Keels
and other devces help prevent a boat
from havng excessve leeway.
Life jack-
et:
A devce used to keep a person afloat.
Also called a lfe preserver, lfe vest, PFD
or personal flotaton devce.
Life raft:
An emergency raft used n case of ser-
ous problems to the parent vessel, such
as snkng.
Lifeline:
A wre or rope rgged around the deck to
prevent the crew fallng overboard.
Limber
holes:
Gaps left at the lower end of frames
above the keel to allow water to dran to
the lowest pont of the blges.
List:
A boat’s more or less permanent lean to
one sde, owng to the mproper dstrbu-
ton of weght, e.g., ballast or water.
