4.1 Direct Mode
In direct mode, any radio can directly communicate with all of the other radios in the
system within the communication coverage area. A Direct Mode system only
requires radios for transmission and reception. As the TX power of the radio is low,
its communication coverage distance is relatively short in direct mode. For example,
the communication distance for the portable radio is 3 kilometers, while the
communication distance for the mobile radio is 3-5 kilometers.
The radio can operate in either analog or digital mode. In the former mode, the radio
uses the analog signaling to realize audio communication. However, in the latter
mode, the radio should satisfy the following conditions to achieve
intercommunication: the RX and TX frequencies of radios are identical; and the
color code of all radios in the system is consistent.
In digital direct mode, the radios support group calls, private calls, all calls, text
message, GPS position, encryption, enable/disable, remote monitor, radio check,
and so on.
The below figure illustrates how the radios work in direct mode. Please note that the
TX and RX frequencies remain the same.
