Figure 10. Model 106 expansion enclosure – top panel with covers not shown
Figure 11 on page 13 provides a conceptual diagram of module slot-index numbering as viewed from
the top of a Model 106 enclosure with all covers removed. To view, the arrangement of PSU module slots-
beneath the system fan slots-see Figure 5 on page 10.

The Model 106 is designed for use with a full load of disks; however, it may also be partially populated. In
Figure 11 on page 13, Gray-colored disk slots indicate minimum disk module placement for power and
cooling reasons. These slots should be populated in all cases. The acronym DDIC (Disk Drive In Carrier) is
used as a synonym for disk drive module.
Populating disk drive slots
The Model 106 does not ship with pre-installed disk drive modules. When installing disk drive modules,
be mindful of the disk slot numbering index shown in Figure 11 on page 13. The following rules apply
when populating the Model 106 enclosure with disks possessing 12 watts maximum drive power per slot:
• Populate the minimum disk slot arrangement indicated by gray-colored disk slots in Figure 11 on page
• Populate the remaining disk slots from enclosure front to back—filling an entire lateral bay (e.g., disks
12–22)—before populating the next bay (e.g., disks 24–34), and so on.
• When rack-mounting a Model 106 enclosure, install the disks after the enclosure is installed in the rack.
