Baluns are also available from other manufacturers. Some of them do not include
the wire necessary to attach the printer to the wall-mounted modular telephone
jack. When these baluns are used, it is important that the proper wire be selected
for making this connection. Note that even short lengths of common parallel
telephone wire, such as that sold by telephone and electronic retail stores, may
cause malfunctions in your printer. To obtain proper wire for this use, see your
IBM representative.
For detailed information about the Telephone Twisted-Pair cable, see IBM 5299
Terminal Multiconnector Model 3 Planning, Setup, and Maintenance Guide, GA27-3749.
Coax Cables
For coax-attached printers, each printer is connected to the computer on a separate
port. The cable cannot be longer than 1500 m (4920 ft).
The following diagram shows how your printer connects to the computer.

If you install a signal cable outside the building, order a station protector kit to
protect your printer from lightning. You can order the kit from your IBM
marketing representative (allow a lead time of 120 days).
One kit (IBM Part Number 1830818) provides two protectors. You need one
protector at each end of the coax cable when the cable is installed outdoors (either
above or below ground level). One attachment kit (IBM Part Number 1833106)
provides the necessary hardware for the attachment of the two protectors.
Individual protectors are available for replacement (IBM Part Number 5252899).
If you are ordering cable from sources other than IBM, see Appendix B, “Cable
Specifications and Assembly of Cables”, for specifications.
Note:
For information about assembling coax cables and connectors, see
Appendix B, “Cable Specifications and Assembly of Cables”. For additional
information about coax cable installation, see Installation and Assembly of
Coaxial Cable and Accessories for Attachment to IBM Products, GA27-2805.
