PCI subsystem
As shown in Figure 7 on page 15, there are five half-length, full-height PCI Express x8 slots
and two half-length, full-height Active PCI Express x8 internal to the x3850 M2 and x3950 M2.
All are vacant in the standard models. All seven slots have the following characteristics:
Separate bus from the other slots and devices
PCI Express x8
40 Gbps full duplex
64-bit, each supporting 32-bit adapters as well
Slots 6 and 7 also support Active PCI hot-swap adapters.
The optional ServeRAID-MR10k adapter does not use a PCI slot because it has a dedicated
slot on the motherboard. See Figure 15 on page 33.
The PCI subsystem also supplies these I/O devices:
LSI 1078 Serial-attached SCSI (SAS) controller.
Broadcom dual port 5709C 10/100/1000 Ethernet.
Six USB ports, two on the front panel, three on the rear, one onboard.
Remote Supervisor Adapter II adapter in a dedicated socket on the I/O board. This
adapter also provides the ATI ES1000 16MB video controller.
EIDE interface for the DVD-ROM drive.
Serial port.
Trusted Platform Module (TPM).
Note:
You require Microsoft Windows Server 2003 to be able to use Active PCI on the
x3850 M2 and x3950 M2. Support in Linux® distributions is planned for 2008.
