Troubleshooting charts
The following tables list problem symptoms and suggested solutions. See the
BladeCenter HS20 Type 8832 Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting
Guide
on the IBM
BladeCenter Documentation
CD for more detailed troubleshooting
charts. If you cannot find the problem in the troubleshooting charts, run the
diagnostic programs. If you have run the diagnostic test programs, or if running the
tests does not reveal the problem, call for service.
Monitor problems
Note:
The monitor remains blank until directed to a blade server that is powered
on; this is normal behavior.
Monitor symptom
Suggested action
The monitor goes blank when
you direct it to a working
blade server, or goes blank
when you start some
application programs in the
blade servers.
Verify that the monitor cable is connected to the video port on the BladeCenter
management module. Some IBM monitors have their own self-tests. If you suspect a
problem with your monitor, see the information that comes with the monitor for
adjusting and testing instructions.
If you still cannot find the problem, try using the monitor with another blade server. If
the problem persists, see the IBM
BladeCenter Type 8677 Hardware Maintenance
Manual and Troubleshooting Guide
on the IBM
BladeCenter Documentation
CD.
The screen is blank.
Verify that:
1. The keyboard/mouse/video select button LED on the front of the blade server is
lit, indicating that the blade server is connected to the shared BladeCenter
monitor.
2. The system power cord is connected to the BladeCenter power module and a
working electrical outlet.
3. The monitor cables are connected properly.
4. The monitor is turned on and the brightness and contrast controls are adjusted
correctly.
Important: In some memory configurations, the 3-3-3 beep code might sound during
POST followed by a blank display screen. If this occurs and the Boot Fail Count
feature in the Start Options of the Configuration/Setup Utility program is set to
Enabled (its default setting), you must restart the server three times to force the
system BIOS to reset the CMOS values to the default memory configuration (memory
connector or bank of connectors Enabled)
If the items above are correct and the screen remains blank, call for service.
Only the cursor appears.
Verify that the keyboard, video, and mouse on the BladeCenter unit have not been
switched to another blade server.
If the problem remains, call for service.
