IBM System Storage DS3500: Introduction and Implementation Guide
2. Connect the power cables to the new expansion enclosure and power-on the expansion
enclosure.
3. Connect one end of a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) cable to the Drive expansion port on
Controller A in the DS3500 storage subsystem.
4. Connect the other end of the SAS cable to either of the SAS IN ports on the left ESM in
the EXP3500 expansion enclosure.
5. Connect one end of a second SAS cable to the Drive expansion port on Controller B in the
DS3500 storage subsystem.
6. Connect the other end of the second SAS cable to the In port on the right ESM in the
expansion enclosure.
7. Wait until the storage subsystem status is Optimal in the DS Storage Manager software
before proceeding to step 8.
8. Add the hard disk drives to the expansion enclosure one at a time.
Adding an EXP3500 to a running DS3500 configuration with EXP3500
attached
In this scenario, there are already EXP3500 enclosures attached to a running DS3500
configuration. We use the following steps to attach the EXP3500 to the DS3500:
1. Make sure that the storage subsystem status is Optimal in the DS Storage Manager
software.
2. Connect the power cables to the new expansion enclosure and power on the expansion
enclosure.
3. Connect one end of a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) cable to the IN port on the left ESM in
the expansion enclosure that is being added to the configuration.
4. Connect the other end of the SAS cable to the OUT port on the left ESM in the last
expansion enclosure in the configuration (this expansion enclosure is directly connected to
the Drive expansion port on controller A of the DS3500).
5. On the last expansion enclosure in the configuration, disconnect the SAS cable from the In
port on the right ESM and connect it to the IN port on the right ESM on the new expansion
enclosure that is being added to the configuration.
6. Connect a SAS cable to the OUT port on the right ESM of the new expansion enclosure
and connect the other end to either of the In port on the right ESM in the expansion
enclosure that was previously connected to controller B of the DS3500.
7. Wait until the storage subsystem status is Optimal in the DS Storage Manager software
before proceeding to step 10.
8. Add the hard disk drives to the expansion enclosure.
Attention: Make sure that you wait at least 30 seconds for the DS Storage Manager
software to recognize each newly added drive before you install the next drive.
Note: When you disconnect the SAS cable in step 5 there will be a loss of drive path
redundancy and the DS Storage Manager Recovery Guru will report an error message.
You can safely disregard this error message because you will restore a redundant drive
path in step 6 when you connect the SAS cable again.
