Preface
This guide describes how to install and use both the internal and external IBM
LTO Ultrium 5 Half-High Tape Drive in the following chapters:
Chapter 1, “Introduction,” on page 1 describes the product, supported servers,
operating systems, and device drivers, and lists hardware specifications.
Chapter 2, “Installing the drive,” on page 9 contains information about unpacking,
setup, and configuration for the internal and external tape drives.
Chapter 3, “Operating the drive,” on page 17 describes the Power button, Unload
button, and status light, and explains the function of the single-character display. It
gives instructions for inserting and removing a tape cartridge, describes methods
of updating drive firmware, and explains how to clean the tape drive. It also lists
diagnostic and maintenance functions.
Chapter 4, “Using Ultrium media,” on page 41 describes the types of tape
cartridges to use with the tape drive and defines the conditions for storing and
shipping them. It also describes how to handle the cartridges, how to set a
cartridge write-protect switch, and how to order additional cartridges.
Chapter 5, “Resolving problems,” on page 49 gives tips for solving tape drive
problems.
Appendix A, Getting help and technical assistance, describes what to do if you
experience a problem with your tape drive, and might help you determine whom
to call for service, if it is necessary.
Appendix B, “TapeAlert flags,” on page 57 lists TapeAlert messages that are
supported and that might help you determine the cause of tape drive problems.
Appendix C, “Error codes and messages,” on page 59 describes the error and
informational codes that appear on the single-character display.
Appendix D, “Repairing a cartridge,” on page 65 describes how to repair a tape
cartridge.
Appendix E, “Information for trained service personnel,” on page 73 gives the
procedure for removing a tape cartridge that will not eject from the drive and
other servicing procedures.
