9-3 Benefits of Corona Inspections
Infrared cameras may miss certain electrical issues due to solar loading when
objects or surfaces being examined absorb heat, resulting in an increase in
temperature
and an obstruction or distortion of thermal readings. For this
reason, infrared
cameras face limitations during the day and inspections are best
performed in the evening.
By contrast, inspections with corona cameras can be conducted during the day
thanks to solar filters that block naturally occurring solar energy, preventing
solar loading and ensuring accurate, reliable results. This eliminates the need
to wait until evening for inspections, resulting in increased efficiency and faster
identification of potential issues.
Both infrared and corona cameras are useful in electrical inspections and
business may benefit from regular daylight corona inspections followed by
evening infrared inspections as some equipment may run hot without producing
coronal discharge or arching.
