29. Main Shaft Encoder Sensor (QM23002)
The Main Shaft Encoder is used to detect the
needle up and down positions. It consists of the
optical encoder (QM23002) that mounts to the
upper extrusion and the encoder disk that mounts
to the main shaft at the rear of the machine.
If the needle is consistently not stopping in the proper position (i.e. just a little above the hopping foot for
the Up position), it may be necessary to adjust the position of the encoder disc on the upper main shaft.
If the Main Shaft Encoder Sensor is unplugged or malfunctioning, one of two things will happen:
1.
The needle will cycle continuously at a slow speed when the Needle Up/Down button is pressed.
2.
The needle will cycle briefly and then an error message will appear regarding a Main Shaft Encoder
Fault.
For each of the above situations, check that the
main shaft encoder cable is plugged into the main
control board at J42 as shown. Check for damage
to the cable or pins that may be loose within the
connector. If the cable appears to be in good shape,
check the senor just under the rear part of the main
shaft and make sure it is mounted properly, with
the disc rotating through the center of the forked
sensor. Replace if necessary.
