Intel Server Management is made up of two key elements: hardware and software. First let us review the hardware
element.
At the heart of Intel
®
Server Management is the baseboard management subsystem which is built into most SPD server
boards. It provides monitoring and control functionality as well as access to sensor information, server event logs, and
field replaceable unit (FRU) catalog information.
The management subsystem is wired to 5V standby so it functions even when the server is turned off or the operating
system has crashed. This is the key to “always accessible” remote management.
There are several different ways to reach the baseboard management subsystem using remote server management
functionality: by LAN through the onboard NIC chip, by modem, or by direct connect serial.
Because the baseboard management subsystem is built-in, there is no need to purchase a remote management card. This
saves money and a server slot. This is the added value customers get when they purchase an Intel server.
In addition, a chassis management controller (which is wired to the baseboard management controller) provides
information on chassis intrusion, the power supply, fans, power control to the front panel, the hot swap backplane, and
more.
