Baseboard Management Subsystem
The Intel baseboard management subsystem is based on IPMI. This industry standard creates an open system for the
added flexibility that is needed in today’s quickly changing technology environment.
You can communicate to the baseboard management controller and related circuitry four different ways:
•
LAN
: You can remotely manage a server over the LAN. Because many Intel boards now have an on-board NIC
chip which, like the baseboard management subsystem, is wired to 5V standby, you can manage a server whether
the OS is running, or the machine is on or off.
•
Modem
: Using an external modem, you can remotely dial into the server and manage it, whether the OS is up or
down, or the machine is on or off.
•
Direct connect seria
l: In cases where a “crash cart” is used, you can directly hook up a laptop to the serial port of
the affected server and manage it in the same manner as LAN and modem management.
•
ICMB
: The Inter-Chassis Management Bus is a method of daisy chaining servers together for purposes of server
management, and it enables many of the same features available in the three methods mentioned above.
