The service partition provides an environment to run utilities and diagnostics when the primary operating system is
unavailable or off-line. The external interface to the service partition is based on industry standards, such as TCP/IP.
The service environment is ROM-DOS* based, and is located on a separate disk partition. The size of the service
partition can be configured during installation. The disk partition includes a set of files called the service partition
software.
The service partition software includes a remote service agent (RSA) that runs in the server environment once a LAN or
serial connection has been established. The RSA provides a management control interface for remote management
applications. The interface includes services such as file transfer; protocol-based text mode redirections; shell and
program launch; and shutdown and reboot. The service partition software also supports the CSSU.
Using the capabilities provided by direct platform control (DPC) on the console and the platform management
technology on the server, the management console can establish a modem or LAN connection to a target server
regardless of the operational state of the target server. The console can then instruct the target server to boot from the
service partition.
