In addition to the server management subsystem, Intel adds several layers of software to the mix. The first layer of the
software stack is the firmware. The firmware allows other higher-level software to talk to the hardware, including the
server management subsystem. The industry standard that is used to talk to the hardware is called IPMI.
On top of the firmware are stacked utilities and BIOS. The utilities and BIOS allow the user to set up a new server,
configure a new or existing server, and diagnose problems during the life of the server.
Note
: the utilities box is offset to denote that it is not needed for the server to boot.
The DMI/CIM layer provides the flexibility for different operating systems to be loaded and run on the server. In
addition, this layer allows various other software applications to talk to the stack.
Finally, the server management graphical user interface provides human-readable access to the value of the stack Intel
Server Management.
