Serial over LAN (SOL) enables suitably designed servers to transparently redirect the serial character stream from the
onboard UART to/from a remote client over the LAN.
This function is handled by a serial hardware multiplexer (MUX) and the BMC. The BMC manages the MUX along
with the transmission and reception of SOL network packets through the NIC.
A remote SOL client is responsible for initiating the SOL session with the BMC and transforming console input and
output from network packets.
SOL is hardware dependent and is a feature of the Intel
®
server boards SE7500WV2, SE7501WV2, SE7501BR2 and
SE7501HG2.
