3.1
Functional description
The INTILION scalebloc is an AC-coupled battery storage system for use in industrial
applications. The battery storage system features lithium-ion batteries (battery modules)
with an overall capacity of 68.5 kWh and one 25 kVA (INTILION scalebloc energy), two
25 kVA (INTILION scalebloc power) or three 25 kVA (INTILION scalebloc power boost)
bidirectional batt
ery inverters (hereinafter referred to as “inverters”).
The battery storage system consists of various assemblies that are fitted in a climate-
controlled outdoor control cabinet in 19” racks. These include the assemblies of the
battery, the battery management system (BMS), the inverter and the ControlShield.
The ControlShield assembly is the internal control unit for the battery storage system and
helps to ensure its safe operation. The ControlShield’s functions include comprehensive
lightning protection (in accordance with DIN VDE 0185-305, DIN VDE 0100-443 and DIN
VDE 0100-534), an implemented energy management system (EMS), external customer
interfaces and the safeguarding and control of internally connected components, such as
climate control.
Applications include behind-the-meter use, which improves the private consumption of
locally generated energy, to reduce load peaks in industrial environments, and for pre-
load storage with regard to electromobility infrastructure.
The energy-flow control for these applications allows for an intelligent energy
management system that sends data to the HOPPECKE cloud via the integrated LTE
modem for monitoring and service support.
Via the “Setpoint specification” application, the battery storage system can also be
controlled using an external interface via Modbus TCP/IP. This ensures that the system is
integrated into overlaid control systems, such as an energy management environment.
The external setpoint specifications are checked for plausibility by the ControlShield,
which ensures that the battery storage system is operated within the defined operating
conditions at all times.
In order to map the regulatory specifications in advance, various protective measures are
integrated into the system. This includes comprehensive lightning protection, an
innovative fire protection concept and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for the
control unit.
