3.5 High Dynamic Range Modes
The
HDR Mode
register, address 0x40000018, is used to enable a High Dynamic Range
(HDR) exposure mode. The following modes are available:
➢
Interleaved (0x00000001)
➢
Interleaved with Image Fuse (0x00000002)
➢
Piecewise (0x00000003)
Set the register to zero for normal exposure.
3.5.1 Interleaved HDR Exposure Mode
The Interleaved HDR mode is useful when there are both under and over exposed areas
within a frame. The Interleaved HDR mode will increase the dynamic ranges within these
dark and bright spots revealing detail that would not be seen otherwise.
In Interleaved HDR mode the even and odd columns have different exposure times. The odd
columns (1, 3, 5, ..) are exposed for the programmed time set by the
Exposure 1
register.
The even columns (2, 4, 6, ...) are exposed for the programmed time set by the
Exposure 2
register. For a color camera the exposure times apply to pairs of columns to preserve the
Bayer pattern.
One exposure time should be set high to see the detail in the dark areas of the image. The
second exposure time should be set low to see the detail in the bright areas of the image.
An image fuse filter is required on the host side to combine these two 'fields' into dramatic
HDR images. Alternatively, set
HDR Mode
to 2 to enable the in-camera image fuse block.
The in-camera image fuse block interpolates missing pixels in the respective column fields
and then averages the two fields for the output.
